Bolton Wanderers supporters clashed with police during Saturday’s clash with Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium as violent scenes marred the fixture.During the Latics’ 5-2 win over their Championship relegation rivals, young children and families were reportedly right in the middle of the melee.2

In a short clip which was posted to Twitter, a fan can be seen being lead from by the arm by police officers. As the individual grabs onto a railing in an attempt to stay, the officers strike him repeatedly.In doing so, the officers then received a barrage of physical and verbal abuse as fans could be seen throwing punches and various items in an attempt to help the man.A Bolton fan, who wished to remain anonymous, told theManchester Evening News:“It was awful. Im not sure what started it, but I believe the police were trying to spot those who were throwing coins and bottles at the Wigan fans.“There was a constant onslaught of bottles and coins which were being thrown between the two sets of supporters – with no security present.2

Some Wigan fans began to attack members of the police force

“There were a number of small children and young families there, right in the middle of the whole thing.”A spokesperson for Bolton Wanderers FC said: We utterly condemn the actions of those involved in the alleged disorder and are supporting Greater Manchester Police in their investigations.Wigan won the game 5-2 as Joe Garner, Gavin Massey, Nick Powell, Michael Jacobs and Leon Clarke all found the net to ease Paul Cook’s hopes of survival, while moving the Trotters eight points adrift of safety.
